[CG tutorial] Gen - 04.Clothes+BG
- 2009-02-08 (Sun)
- 7★ Tools | drawING process
Gen’s clothes is pretty easy..cuz it’s doesn’t have any patterns on it XD;
I did the clothes on another layer so I don’t have to worry about color over the hair. First I applied solid colors to the clothes.

[CG tutorial] Gen - 03.Hair

you can see from this picture I’ve made the eyes gray again~ XD
There are many ways to draw the hair, depending on how complicated you want it to be. This is just one way of doing it~~ you can do it on another layer or the same layer, the good thing for having it on another layer is it’s easier to erase unwanted parts, especially around the face~ if you want to erase a part of the hair you’ll end up erasing the skin also if they are on the same layer~~ so maybe you’ll want to have it on a new layer ON TOP of the skin. But I usually do it on the same layer…cuz I’m too lazy…XD;;;;

[CG tutorial] Gen - 02.Skin+Eyes

actually when I started to color the skin and eyes, I realized that Gen was probably not a good choice cuz his skin and eyes are all really light color…cuz he made his image from a snow figure..kinda..but anyways~
create another layer UNDER the lines layer and start with a light skin base. I forgot to save the picture of the first base..so the picture is with two shades of skin color.

[CG tutorial] Gen - 01.Lines

so…here I go with the tutorial…although I am horrible at explaining stuff…
hopefully this will be useful for at least some people T-T
the character I’m drawing for the tutorial is Gen
from Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou~
I’m using this picture as the color reference

since I draw the line art on computer too, there really isn’t much to talk about how to do the lines I think…cuz everybody got their own drawing styles, so it’s just how you design the layout and pose of the character~
here’s a tip if you are doing lines on the computer, or if you are scanning in the sketch and want to trace it on the computer again to make it neater - Do the line art at a higher zoom level. Meaning, at 150% or 200% zoom (or higher if you want). If your hand shakes a bit but you are doing it at a higher zoom level, when you go back to 100% the lines will look smoother. If you are drawing directly on computer like I am doing, it’s sometimes hard to get the right proportion at 200% level cuz you can only see a little part of the picture, so it’s a good idea to sketch it at 100% first then trace it at 200% =).
Here is the my line art for the tutorial

First of all, I think I am no where near the level to qualify for making tutorials….but I’ll try my best~

The tools I use for CG: Wacom tablet, Corel Painter and Photoshop.

Wacom tablet is a tool that lets you use a stylist to draw. It has very good sensitivity levels~~ for more info on the tablet, please refer to this post.

[CG Stuff] Layers basics

I think I’m not good enough to make a tutorial on drawing ^^; so I’ll just share some of the methods I use. This is my first attempt at making a video to explain stuff~~ so advance apology if it makes people even more confused….
Someone asked me on youtube about how to use layers in drawing program; specifically in Corel Painter (which is the program I used in this video).
The specifically question was if the lines were draw on the “canvas” layer, how to have color underneath the lines.
